Brick Gentry P.C. celebrates the expansion of its healthcare law division as Jeanine M. Freeman, J.D., joins the firm. Jeanine will bring depth of healthcare law knowledge at both the federal and state level as well as valuable insight into the administrative process concerning healthcare providers. Jeanine joins Brick Gentry after retiring from her duties as Deputy Executive Vice President of Legal Affairs and Policy Development for the Iowa Medical Society.

Jeanine hails originally from Sioux City, Iowa, and earned her law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1978. In addition to many of Jeanine’s accomplishments, she brings a wealth of healthcare law experience to complement Brick Gentry’s healthcare law team. She became an Assistant Attorney General with the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, serving in the Health and Administrative Law Divisions, where she represented the Iowa Department of Public Health, the Iowa Department of Substance Abuse, the Iowa Health Data Commission, and various health licensing boards from 1980 through 1984.

Jeanine joined the Iowa Hospital Association in 1984 and served as legal counsel until 1993, when she was in the position of Senior Vice President and Legal Counsel. She was an adjunct professor with Drake University’s College of Business and Public Administration from 1992-1993. In 1993, Jeanine became a shareholder/partner with Dickinson, Mackaman, Tyler and Hagen in Des Moines, Iowa, focusing her practice principally in health law. In 1997, she joined the Iowa Medical Society, where her scope included serving as staff liaison to its Committee on Law and Ethics. She eventually was named Deputy Executive Vice President of Legal Affairs and Policy Development for the Iowa Medical Society. As an active member of both the American Health Lawyers Association and the Iowa State Bar Association, she served as chair of the Health Law Section from 1994-95, and on the executive committee of the Iowa Society of Healthcare Attorneys from 1994-1997. Since 1997, she has been a member of the American Society of Medical Association Counsel (ASMAC), a national organization of attorneys representing medical societies and physicians, having served on its executive committee and as ASMAC president in 2006. Jeanine has presented often on a range of health care topics affecting physician practices, including course lectures on law and medical ethics at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, and Des Moines University.

Jeanine is also very involved in her community. Her service to the community includes serving on the board and executive committee of the American Red Cross, Central Iowa Chapter, and chairing its International Services Committee. In 2004, she received the Chapter’s International Humanitarian Services Award. She has served as a member and president of the boards of Hospice of Central Iowa and the Walnut Creek Family YMCA, a member of the Grandview College Library Advisory Committee, member of the Youth Law Center Board of Directors from 2003-2005, member and president of the St. Catherine of Siena Foundation Board 2004 to 2010, and member and president of the board for the Center for Social Ministry from 2009 through 2014. For many years she served as chair of the Iowa Department of Public Health’s Statewide Perinatal Guidelines Advisory Committee. From 1993-1995, Jeanine served on the first Citizens’ Advisory Board to the Des Moines Register. In 1994 she became the recipient of the Briar Cliff College Alumni Professional Achievement Award. She is a 1998 graduate of the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute. Jeanine recently received the John F. Sanford Award from the Iowa Medical Society at its annual meeting in April, 2014, which honors a lay person for outstanding contributions to public health or the field of health care.
